What is Vascular Trauma?
Vascular trauma or vascular disease refers to the injury in a blood vessel. Injury can occur in arteries, the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the organs and veins which return blood to the heart.
Causes
The injuries are categorized by the type of trauma that caused them. There are usually two types of injuries.
- The blunt injury occurs when a blood vessel gets stretched or crushed.
- A penetrating injury occurs when blood vessels get punctured or torn.
Either type of injuries can lead to thrombosis, a condition in which blood vessels clot and blood flow is interrupted or causes bleeding which can lead to hemorrhage which is a life-threatening condition.
Treatment
There are many treatment options and a vascular surgeon can guide you best about them.
