What is Laparotomy?

Laparotomy is a surgical procedure in which incision is made into an abdominal cavity. The incision is made to examine the abdominal organs and to diagnose any problem including abdominal pain. Laparotomy is also called abdominal exploration.

A common reason for Laparotomy is to investigate the reasons for abdominal pain. The abdominal organs include digestive system organs (Stomach, intestines and liver) and other organs like kidneys and bladder.

Before the operation

Certain protocols are followed before the operation

  • You are shaved in the abdominal area
  • You are given a surgical scrub lotion to use in shower and gown to wear.
  • You are given an enema to help you empty your bowels.
  • You’ll have nothing to eat hours before the procedure.

Laparotomy procedure

It is performed under general anesthesia. A single cut is made through the skin and muscle of the abdomen so underlying organs are viewed clearly.  Once the problem is diagnosed, it may be foxed at the same time or in some cases, a second operation is needed. Once the procedure is complete, the overlying skin is sewn closed.

You can consult the best laparoscopic surgeon through the HospitALL website and app.
