What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a disease in which discoloration of the skin occurs in patches. This can happen at any part of your body. Our skin color is determined by the production of melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the cells which produce melanin stop functioning or die due to some cause. Vitiligo isn’t contagious or life-threatening, but it carries a social stigma. People with vitiligo often feel bad about their appearance due to societal standards of beauty.

Symptoms

The main symptom of vitiligo is the patchy skin discoloration. Further signs include

  • Graying of hair on scalp, lashes, eyebrows and beard too
  • Loss of color or change in color of the inner eye color (retina)
  • Premature whitening and graying of hair may occur
  • Graying of eyelashes, eyebrows and beard

It can start at any age but usually starts before age 20. Discolored patches may occur at different parts of the body depending upon the type of vitiligo you have

  • The most common type of vitiligo is called Generalized vitiligo in which patches progress symmetrically and occur in many parts of the body.
  • In Segmental vitiligo, the patches occur only on one side or one part of the body.
  • In localized or focal vitiligo, one few areas are affected.

Treatment

This condition has no cure. Treatment may only help to stop or slow the process of discoloration. Consult the doctor when your hair, eyes and skin start losing color. The right dermatologist will suggest the treatment suiting your needs.
