What is Skin Cancer?

An unusual amount of growth of skin cells is skin cancer and this generally seems to happen in areas of the skin that is exposed to sunlight though, this isn’t always the case. The disease more specifically happens because of mutations appearing within the DNA of a person’s skin cells. These errors are the catalyst for the cells to grow at an uncontrollable rate forming a large number of cancer cells. The thin layer that is a protective cover for the skin is the epidermis and it contains three main types of cells. Squamous cells are the skin’s inner lining, basal cells make new skin cells, and melanocytes produce melanin which gives the skin its normal color. The type of skin cancer is determined by where it originates. Squamous cell carcinoma happens on sun-exposed areas of the skin like a person’s face, hands, and ears and those with darker skin tend to have it more on non sun exposed areas of the skin. Melanoma is cancer that can appear anywhere on the skin or cause an existing mole to become cancerous; men usually have it on their faces while women tend to have it on their lower legs. Basal cell carcinoma most of the time appears onto the neck or face where there is more exposure to the sun. Skin cancer is also caused by ultraviolet light, being exposed to toxic substances, or having a condition that weakens the immune system.

Treatment

If there is early detection of skin cancer and it is small, it can be removed quite simply by a biopsy procedure. If skin cancer is worse, then treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Mohs surgery, freezing, and more, may be used. The type of treatment used will depend on the type of skin cancer and overall the situation of the patient. HospitALL provides the best doctors to treat skin cancer.
