About Piles

Piles also called hemorrhoids are inflamed and swollen tissues in the anal and rectal area. Piles can develop inside the rectal area (internal hemorrhoids) or outside the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids are a very common condition affecting three out of four adults once in their lifetime.

Symptoms

Symptoms of hemorrhoids depend upon the type of hemorrhoid

External Hemorrhoids

In external hemorrhoids, a swollen outgrowth of tissues is around the anus. Symptoms include

  • Itching around the anal region
  • Extreme pain and discomfort
  • Swelling in the anal region
  • Bleeding

Internal Hemorrhoids

Internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectal area and it is not visible outside. Symptoms include

  • Painless bleeding while passing stool
  • Protruding hemorrhoid results in pain and irritation

Causes
