About Piles
Piles also called hemorrhoids are inflamed and swollen tissues in the anal and rectal area. Piles can develop inside the rectal area (internal hemorrhoids) or outside the skin around the anus (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids are a very common condition affecting three out of four adults once in their lifetime.

External Hemorrhoids
In external hemorrhoids, a swollen outgrowth of tissues is around the anus. Symptoms include
- Itching around the anal region
- Extreme pain and discomfort
- Swelling in the anal region
- Bleeding
Internal Hemorrhoids
Internal hemorrhoids occur inside the rectal area and it is not visible outside. Symptoms include
- Painless bleeding while passing stool
- Protruding hemorrhoid results in pain and irritation
Causes
Exact causes of piles are still not clear, but this may occur due to
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic Diarrhea
- Pregnancy
- Increased pressure in the lower rectum
Treatment
Piles can resolve on its own without the need for extensive treatment. Some treatment option include
- Lifestyle changes including dietary change and weight loss
- Increased water consumption
- Medication and laxatives
- Surgical options
