What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a condition in which the spine in the upper back has an excessive curvature which is also called as a hunchback in common terms.

The upper back of our spine has a natural slight curve to absorb shock and support the weight of our head. Hunchback or kyphosis occurs when the curvature is larger than the normal arc.

People having kyphosis have a visible hunch on their upper back. It may appear protruding and is noticeably rounded.

This leads to excess pressure on the spine causing extreme pain. It also leads to breathing difficulties.

Causes

It can affect people of any age. The main cause is poor posture. The kyphosis which occurs due to poor posture is called postural kyphosis.

Other main causes are

  • Aging
  • Weak muscle in the upper back
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Injury to spine
  • Disc slip
  • Scoliosis

Treatment
