What is a Cluster Headache?
Cluster headaches are the least common type of headache. They are a number of quite short but very painful headaches that occur every day for weeks or even months at a time. They tend to always come around at the same time each year, during spring or fall for example and because of this, they are mistaken for allergies or stress. There hasn’t been a direct cause found and they can stop and start whenever for any period of time. The sensation, severe pain around an eye, is so bad that those experiencing it cannot be still. A specific nerve pathway is activated by the hypothalamus and affects the trigeminal nerve; this is responsible for the pain felt. Cluster headaches are more common in men and seem to appear more in smokers and heavy drinkers.
Treatment
Medication which stops or eases the pain is the main treatment option for cluster headaches. Though if the pain is constant and there are hardly breaks between headaches, then surgery is an option.
