What is a cataract?

Cataract is a condition that affects the eyes. It is the clouding of otherwise a normally clear eye lens. People with a cataract see things as if a person with normal vision is seeing them through a frosty or foggy window. It is harder for them to read, drive a car or see the expressions of others. In most cases, cataracts take their time to properly disturb the visions of people and when this happens, surgery is usually required to deal with the cataract. The development of a cataract is usually down to the growth in age or injury changing the tissues with the eye’s lens. Other reasons may be genetic disorders, other eye conditions, past eye surgery or diabetes, and the long-term use of steroids. There are different types of cataracts and they include, cataracts affecting the center, the edge and the back of the lens and cataracts that are there from birth or childhood. The one that affects the back of the lens progresses the fastest.

Treatment

The main and most common treatment for a cataract is surgery. Doctors will advise to do the surgery only if and when they start affecting the quality of life or the ability to perform normal tasks like reading or driving at night. There is usually no rush to do the procedure unless vision gets rapidly worse which tends to be the case with diabetes patients. Within the surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial clear lens, placed where the natural lens would usually be remaining as a permanent of the eye. People with other eye problems may not be able to have an artificial lens, instead, once the cataract is removed, they wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. While the procedure is safe, it carries a risk of infection and bleeding and also increases the likelihood of retinal detachment. After the procedure, there will be discomfort for a few days while full healing happens within 8 weeks. In the case surgery for both eyes is needed, the doctor will operate one eye and then operate the other eye once the first eye has fully healed.
