What is a brain tumor?

A brain tumor is the large growth of abnormal cells within the brain. Some brain tumors are noncancerous while others are cancerous. Brain tumors can either start right from the brain, primary brain tumors, or cancer can start from one part of the body and then eventually reach the brain, secondary brain tumors. Primary brain tumors start when normal cells get mutations in their DNA which causes them to grow and divide at increased rates; they continue to live instead of dying like healthy cells, this creates a mass of abnormal cells forming a tumor. Secondary brain tumors are much more common than primary brain tumors in adults and usually occur in people who have a history of cancer. Breast cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and melanoma are the usual causes of secondary brain tumors.

Treatment

Surgery is the usual treatment for brain tumors. If they’re small and easy to seperate, all of the tumor can be removed. In other cases if tumors are harder to seperate or are located in a sensitive area, the surgeon will remove as much as they can to reduce symptoms. The risks of removing a tumor can be high with infection and bleeding possible. If the tumor is located near nerves that connect to the eyes, it can result in vision loss. Other treatment options include radiation therapy, radiosurgery and chemotherapy. The doctor will decide as to what procedure is best based on the situation. After the surgery, rehabilitation may be needed in a certain area such as physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, or therapy for young children to help cope with their changes.
