What is Autism?

Autism is a complex condition to do with problems in communication and behaviour. Depending on what spectrum the autism is on, it can be a minor problem or require full time care. Those that are diagnosed with it have trouble in communicating, understanding how others feel and think and have a hard time expressing themselves. They may have problems learning and so may have their skills develop unevenly and those that do tend to be good at art, music, math or memory. Autism is much more common in males than females. Different spectrums include asperger’s, where children mainly have social problems with a narrow amount of interests, autistic disorder which is the form of autism most people refer to, and more. There is no main cause of it but it is to do with problems with parts of the brain which interpret sensory input and process language. Autism also runs in the family so a certain combination of genes increases the likelihood of getting it. Children with an older parent and a pregnant woman exposed to certain drugs or chemicals have a higher risk of having an autistic child.

Treatment

While there is no cure for autism, treatment can make a big difference for a child. Recognising autism early and telling the doctor as soon as possible would be best. The doctor will tailor treatment specifically for the child because every child will be different. Main treatments include behavioural and communication therapy, to help encourage positive behaviour and also discourage negative behaviour at an early age and the use of medication to help with the symptoms of autism such as anxiety, attention problems and hyperactivity.
