What is Angioplasty?

Angioplasty is a surgical procedure to open clogged arteries in the heart. A tiny balloon catheter is inserted into the blocked blood vessel to help widen it thus increasing blood flow to the heart. It may be used if other medications or lifestyle changes have not improved heart health, chest pain is worsening or if there is a heart attack. It’s not recommended for everyone and depends on the situation

Treatment

Once a patient has gone through with this procedure, provided it is non-emergency, they’ll stay overnight at the hospital before being able to go to work the next week. The doctor will decide on the restrictions for a period of time but drinking plenty of water is needed to flush contrast dye out of the body. For medication, blood thinning medicine will need to be taken like aspirin. The doctor will decide which medicine is needed, the dosage and for how long depending on the situation.
