What is Acute Limb Ischaemia?

Acute Limb Ischaemia appears when blood flow suddenly becomes reduced to a limb. It can appear in all age groups but most commonly occurs in those who smoke tobacco cigarettes and have diabetes. Symptoms of it can include pain, pale appearance of the limb affected, feeling very cold, paralysis and pulselessness. Chronic Limb Ischaemia is a more severe version of ALI and brings additional symptoms such as rest pain, feeling a continuous burning pain of the lower leg or feet and tissue loss which is the development of gangrene. This can result in potential amputation of the limb.

Treatment

The treatment of ALI is usually surgery with emergency embolectomy if the limb is still viable. Another option is vascular bypass where the blood flow is routed around the clot. If surgery is not possible then those with ALI may be treated with medications. Treatment also depends on many factors such as which limb is affected, how long it’s been, individual risks, how big the lesion(s) is/are and more. For CLI, the only option is surgery similar to ALI but if there is tissue loss, then an amputation of the limb must be done.
