What is Abdominal Surgery?
Abdominal surgery is an operation done on organs including, the gallbladder, stomach, pancreas, appendix, small or large intestine, or appendix. Abdominal surgery may happen for many reasons such as having an infection, pain, tumors or obstruction. Common surgeries include an appendectomy, a hernia removal, and abdominal exploration and surgery for inflammatory bowel disease.
Treatment
The surgery may either be performed as an open or laparoscopic procedure:
- Open Procedure: the surgeon will make a traditional incision and this will be closed with sutures or staples.
- Laparoscopic Procedure: the surgeon will make multiple tiny incisions and then inserts instruments that are attached to a camera, allowing a clear view of the internal organs.
