What is Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a large area in the lower aorta. The aorta is the largest blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. If the aneurysm on the aorta ruptures/bursts, it can cause life-threatening bleeding, resulting in rapid blood loss.
Treatment
There are two types of treatment. One is monitoring the aneurysm, where the growth of it is checked on a regular basis and further growth is prevented by managing medical conditions that lead to this, such as high blood pressure.
If the aneurysm grows to 1.9-2.2 inches, then the other treatment option is surgery is:
- Open abdominal surgery: this is where the damaged section of the aorta is removed and replaced with a synthetic tube (graft), which is sewn into place. Full recovery takes a month or more.
- Endovascular repair: this procedure is used more often as it doesn’t interfere as much with the body. Doctors attach a synthetic graft to the end of a thin tube (catheter) that's inserted through an artery in the leg and threaded into the aorta.
