About Plastic Surgeon
A plastic surgeon is an individual who is qualified and certified to be able to practice plastic surgery and perform it on an individual. Plastic surgery is reconstructing or repairing parts of the body by transferring tissue. Plastic surgery can be confused for cosmetic surgery but cosmetic surgery concerns only enhancing people’s appearances, like breast enhancement, skin rejuvenation, face contouring, etc, while plastic surgery is aimed at repairing any defects so that they are able to reconstruct a normal function and appearance. To be a plastic surgeon, an individual needs to complete a post-graduate residency program. They can either go through an integrated residency training combining three years of general surgery and three years of plastic surgery or, they can go through an independent five year residency program in general surgery with a three year plastic surgery residency program.
What They Can Do
Plastic surgeons can perform procedures like breast reconstruction, burn repair surgery, lower extremity reconstruction, hand surgery, scar revision surgery, and more. In addition to that, plastic surgeons can do microsurgery where they reconstruct missing tissues by transferring a piece of tissue to the reconstruction site and reconnecting blood vessels for things like hand surgery/replantation. They may also perform pediatric plastic surgery to fix any birth defects the child faces, for example syndactyly (webbing of the fingers and toes). They both focus on the appearance and reconstruction of functionality of the part they’re operating on. In addition to reconstructive surgery, they are qualified to perform cosmetic surgery too so they can do both. Though with every type of surgery, there are of course complications and common risks include nerve damage, infection, implant failure, organ damage, and scarring.
Types
As mentioned above, there are cosmetic surgeons and plastic surgeons. Plastic surgeons can do everything a cosmetic surgeon can do while not all cosmetic surgeons can do what plastic surgeons can do.
