About Radiologist

A medical doctor who specializes in using medical imaging techniques like x-rays, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, ultrasound, positron emission tomography (PET), and computed technology (CT). To be a radiologist, they’d have to have graduated from a recognised medical school, passed their licensing exam, and finished a residency of minimum four years of unique postgraduate medical education in, not limited to, radiation safety, radiation effects on human anatomy, and appropriate performance, interpretation of quality radiologic, and medical imaging examinations. Additionally, many radiologists complete a fellowship where they get one-two years of training in a specific subspecialty of radiology such as nuclear medicine, cardiovascular radiology, or breast imaging. 

What They Can Do

They can act as expert consultants to the physician that sends their patients for testing to the radiology department or clinic by helping the physician in choosing the right examination, finding out information from resulting medical images, and using test results to give the appropriate care. They can also treat diseases by using radiation (radiation oncology) or minimally invasive therapeutic intervention (interventional radiology). 

Types

There are three main types of radiologists, diagnostic and interventional radiologists and radiation oncologists. Diagnostic radiologists are the ones that see inside their patient’s body to assess or diagnose the patient’s condition using different imaging procedures to do so. They’re the ones that act as expert consultants and after a lot of clinical work and related research, they may also specialize in subspecialties like breast imaging, cardiovascular radiology, chest radiology, emergency radiology, pediatric radiology, musculoskeletal radiology (muscles and skeleton)j, genitourinary radiology (reproductive and urinary systems), gastrointestinal radiology (stomach, intestines, and abdomen), and more. 

Interventional Radiologists treat and diagnose their patients with the help of minimally invasive, image guided techniques like x-rays and MRI. Here, they make small incisions in the body and carefully control instruments to find the source of a medical problem delivering targeted treatments. Treatment can be for conditions such as stroke, cancer, heart disease, and more with the procedure offering less risk, pain and recovery time compared to surgery. 

Lastly Radiation Oncologists are highly trained doctors who prescribe and are the ones that oversee every cancer patient’s treatment. With radiation therapy they treat cancer and monitor the patient to see progress and adjust accordingly to provide the best quality care. They go through extensive training in cancer medicine, in safe use of radiation to treat disease, and training to manage any side effects caused by radiation.
