About Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

Surgery is a medical specialty that makes use of manual machinery and instrumental techniques on a person to either find out or treat a disease or injury, to help better the body’s function, appearance, or to repair unwanted ruptured areas. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of many surgery specialties. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon focuses on reconstructive face surgery, facial trauma surgery, head and neck, mouth and jaws, the oral cavity, and they are also able to perform facial cosmetic surgery. Surgeons must first obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and while there’s not a specific major that’s needed to become a surgeon, most people will choose to study science, others may choose to study biology, health science, chemistry, kinesiology, and physics. While in university, they need to fulfill pre-med course requirements, gain experience, and complete their MCAT to get into medical school. Once finished with med school, the student will have to complete surgical residency which will take six years and grant them their degree.
