About General Surgeon

Surgery is a medical specialty that makes use of manual machinery and instrumental techniques on a person to either find out or treat a disease or injury, to help better the body’s function, appearance, or to repair unwanted ruptured areas. General surgeons are a part of a surgical speciality which can focus on the stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, appendix, and more. They can additionally treat diseases related to the skin, breast, trauma, hernias, etc. Surgeons must first obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university and while there’s not a specific major that’s needed to become a surgeon, most people will choose to study science, others may choose to study biology, health science, chemistry, kinesiology, and physics. While in university, they need to fulfill pre-med course requirements, gain experience, and complete their MCAT to get into medical school. Once finished with med school, the student will have to complete surgical residency which will take five years. An additional year-three years may be required to learn subspecialties.

What They Can Do

A general surgeon is able to perform many types of surgeries such as trauma surgery or critical surgery, laparoscopic surgery, breast surgery, minor vascular operations, and more. Trauma surgery is the most commonly surgical procedure that general surgeons are called upon to perform, this is where the patient is critically ill or severely injured. A usual procedure includes cholecystectomy, the surgical removal of the gallbladder. General surgeons are the ones to perform the majority of non-cosmetic breast surgery like with the removal of one or both breasts to even to diagnose breast cancer.

Types

There aren’t different types of General Surgeons but they can be differentiated with the amount of experience and additional skills they have.
