About Fertility specialist

A fertility specialist is a reproductive endocrinologist, a physician who has specialized in a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology called reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). REI is a subject of medicine that deals with hormonal functioning as it concerns to reproduction and infertility in both women and men.

Usually, fertility doctors have OB/GYN training before they undertake specialization in infertility. Some of the specialists undergo extensive training to perform delicate medical and surgical procedures.

What they can do?

Fertility experts treat reproductive health issues both in men and women. Fertility specialist should be consulted in the very earlier stages of the reproductive and conceiving issues. The fertility specialists focus on the assessment and treatment of infertility.

When patients visit a fertility specialist, they are required to take a fertility exam. A standard fertility assessment includes physical examination and medical and sexual histories of both partners.

Men are required to undergo a sperm analysis which includes the assessment of sperm count and sperm structure and its movement. For women, their ovulation is monitored. This is done through blood tests, ultrasound, or an ovulation test kit. If a woman is ovulating, doctors perform a standard test called a hysterosalpingogram. This test is a type of X-ray done for fallopian tubes and uterus.

Sometimes laparoscopy is done which allows the doctors to analyze ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes. After the examination, doctors decide the type of fertility treatment that is required.

Fertility specialists deal both with male and female infertility and reproductive health issues. Male fertility is as common as female infertility. One should consult a fertility specialist if they are one of these

  • Women who went through more than one miscarriage
  • Women under 35 who didn’t conceive after 12 months of trying
  • Men with poor semen analysis
  • Men with erectile dysfunction
  • Women over 35 who didn’t conceive after 6 months of trying
