About Otologist

An otologist is a highly qualified doctor who specifically specializes in the ear, nose, and throat. They can also be called neurotologists though otologists and neurotologists are different in a few ways. Otologists focus on diagnosing difficult to treat or recurring middle ear problems while also being able to perform complex/complicated ear surgeries. Neurotologists on the other hand focus on more neurological-related problems and the inner ear like skull base tumors, hearing devices like cochlear implants and bone conduction hearing aids, and balance disorders. Both are able to treat ear disorders such as cholesteatoma and meniere’s disease though. To become an otologist, a person is recommended to become a certified otolaryngologist first where they then have to complete a year of general surgery training and once that’s done, four years of specific otolaryngology training. Otolaryngologists are special doctors who are trained to. Once certified in otolaryngology, they may pick otology as the specific field they want to enter into.

What They Can Do

Otologists can treat complex ear diseases, hearing loss by implanting a hearing device, tumor in or around the ear, perform revision ear surgery, complicated vertigo that doesn’t seem to be improving, and helping with recurring or chronic ear infections as an otolaryngologist. Specifically as an otologist, they can identify the signs and symptoms of Meniere’s disease, finding the causes of tinnitus and finding ways to treat it, and they can also define the development and as to how otitis media progresses. Otolaryngologists can manage sinusitis, allergies, mouth and throat cancer, ear infections, dizziness, hearing loss, masses of the neck, trauma to the face and neck, and to help with other problems that are related to the structures of the head and neck.

Types

There aren’t types of otologists but rather they’re differentiated with how qualified and experienced they are.
